As it comes time to apply for college, you will be narrowing your college search to safety, reach and target schools. You should make time to visit campuses or schedule interviews to get to know the schools better. Beacon will have visits from college representatives throughout the fall who students can sit with and ask questions. This schedule can be found on the colleges tab of Naviance.
Many applications will ask for the high school code or CEEB - Beacon's is: 333438.

As you go through the process, remember the following DO's and DON'T's for the college application process:
DOs
DON’Ts
DOs
- Put your name and social security number on all documents you are mailing, including checks (parent’s last names are often different than student’s so always put the student’s name on checks so they can be identified in the event the check is separated from the application).
- When filling out your high school’s name – remember you go to The Beacon School (not Beacon High School) in NYC. There are other Beacon’s in New York
- Proofread your essay – Don’t just use spell check. If you name a school in the essay, make sure that you match the correct essay to the correct application. Sending an essay to Columbia that says, “and that’s why NYU is the perfect fit for me” is NOT GOOD.
- Follow up with each school to make sure they have received all parts of your application. Do not assume they will notify you if something is missing.
- If there is anything unusual about your transcript (large drop in grades, etc.) be sure to mention it in some part of your application (essay, additional info section, or advisor recommendation).
- Give as much thought to short answer questions as you would to essays.
- Make a folder in your email labeled COLLEGE and place every college related email in it! Also keep all passwords and users names here as well.
- CHECK YOUR EMAIL DAILY!!! You do not want to miss important information from colleges.
- Remember to be yourself throughout this process!
DON’Ts
- Don’t RUSH … take your time with each application.
- Don’t indicate interest in a major the school does not offer unless it is a school that welcomes students to develop their own majors.
- Don’t forget to send the application fee or fee waiver if you qualify for one.
- Don’t forget to send your test scores to each school you are applying to (if they require them).
- DON’T MISS DEADLINES – PLAN AHEAD!!!
- Don’t forget to keep your parents, teachers, and advisor updated on your college progress
- Don’t forget to thank teachers for writing your recommendations!!
- Don’t forget ALL of senior grades count!! First quarter grades go to all ED/EA schools and 1st semester and final grades go to ALL of your colleges.
TOP 10 REASONS NOT TO APPLY TO MORE THAN 10 COLLEGES
10. You will be writing supplements all throughout the fall semester so your grades will suffer. This will hurt your chances of being admitted to the colleges you have worked so hard to get into.
9. It is TOO expensive to pay the application fees ($50-$75 each) plus sending scores ($12 each). If you applied to 15 schools that could be a cost of $1,300!!
8. It is too time consuming to express interest, visit schools, go to rep meetings at Beacon, follow-up with, and interview at that many schools. This will hurt your chances of being admitted to each individually.
7. Believe it or not, receiving too many accept letters is extremely stressful. You will only have a few weeks to make your decision in April and not enough time to fully explore more than a few schools. You will always wonder if you make the right choice.
6. You may have an extremely large amount of financial aid forms to complete which cost $36 for some schools. Also, you may want to fill out scholarship applications for each school. This is MORE work and time.
5. You may confuse colleges when writing specific essays for the school or while interviewing. It's difficult to remember the exact details of so many schools. The more attention you can give to each school you love, the better your essays and interviews will be, and therefore increasing odds of acceptance.
4. You will not be able to enjoy your senior year.
3. You're creating more competition at each college which makes it harder to get in. The more students who apply with little intention of attending, the more difficult it will be for YOU to get in and vice versa.
2. You can apply to up to 6 CUNY and 6 SUNY schools. This will only count as 2 from your list of 10.
1. The Beacon College Office does NOT allow you to. :)
